Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that Mason Greenwood’s situation has influenced his decision to keep Jesse Lingard until the end of the season.

What has Greenwood done?

Mason Greenwood has been released on bail following his arrest on suspicion of raping a woman.

The 20-year-old forward was also arrested on Sunday for suspicion of assault, following claims made by his girlfriend, Harriet Robson, on social media.

He was then later arrested again on Tuesday, with suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Manchester United confirmed that the player would be unavailable to train and play for the three-time European champions until further notice, leaving Rangnick a man short in attacking options.

How does this affect Lingard?

Lingard had hoped to leave Old Trafford, with Newcastle and West Ham showing interest in signing the England international.

“Three weeks ago Jesse didn’t want to leave and then he changed his mind,” said Rangnick.

“I said at the time, if he finds a club and a solution that suits us, we would allow him to leave. With the developments in the last couple of days, things changed.

“On Monday afternoon, the board said they wanted him to stay. We are without a player who has played regularly and also we couldn’t get an agreement for any other club.”

The German also confirmed that Lingard would miss tonight’s FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough, with the 29-year-old given time off “to clear his head.”

The club advised me to have time off due to personal reasons! But my headspace is clear and I’ll always be professional when called upon and give 100 percent

Lingard has made just nine Premier League appearances this season, scoring two goals.
