Jurgen Klopp took aim at England manager Gareth Southgate following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

The clash between Liverpool and City at Anfield ended in a thrilling stalemate, leaving the Premier League title race wide open.

Despite facing an early onslaught from City, Klopp’s side gained momentum as the game progressed. Liverpool dominated possession and created numerous chances, though they couldn’t secure a victory.

One notable absence was centre-back Ibrahima Konate, who sustained an injury in Liverpool’s recent 5-1 victory over Sparta Prague.

In Konate’s absence, Joe Gomez stepped into the starting lineup and delivered a solid performance, effectively containing the threats posed by Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne.

After the match, Klopp questioned why Gomez, who last played for England in October 2020, has been consistently overlooked for national team selection.

‘Joe Gomez. Gareth [Southgate], honestly,’ Klopp said when speaking to Sky Sports after the match.

Gomez’s last appearance for England was in a friendly against Wales, and despite being named in squads for UEFA Nations League matches against Belgium and Denmark later that month, he didn’t see any game time.

Southgate, who handed Gomez his senior England debut in 2017, has only used him sparingly, with Gomez accumulating just 11 caps for the Three Lions.

With limited opportunities to stake a claim for a spot in the England squad ahead of the Euros in Germany this summer, Gomez faces an uphill battle.

England’s upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, followed by matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland in June, will be crucial for Southgate to finalise his Euro 2024 roster.

England’s Euro 2024 campaign will commence against Serbia on June 16.
