William R. Smith 1931-2022

CORTLAND — William R. Smith, 90, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, at Concord Care Center of Hartford.

He was born July 4, 1931, in Alliance, to Ward and Gladys Quick Smith.

He attended East Liverpool High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Korean War, 5th Cavalry Regiment, Japan occupation. He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Bill attended St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Cortland.

He retired from Armac Company and Kohn Transport, where he worked as a truck driver. As a member of his local union chapter, he served as vice president, sergeant of arms and trustee. Bill worked as a courier for Urban Co., LLC., in Warren until his late 80s.

He loved playing golf and was a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Elaine C. Robbins Smith; his children, Robin Plemmons of Washington, Nancy Ramsey, Patti (Kevin) Bergman of Lititz, Pa., William W.R. (Ellen) Smith of Brighton, Mich., and Robert A. (Kim) Smith of Alliance; his stepdaughter, Michelle (David) Jones of Cortland; his brother-in-law, Ralph Carbone of Cortland; and his grandchildren, Matthew (Rachel), Brett (Amy Cisney), Joshua (Meghan) Bergman and Breanna (Dr. Aaron) Hiller, Jacob (Bella), Nicolas and Olivia Smith, and Kayla, Morgan (fiance Brian) and Jordan Smith; 11 great-grandchildren, and two on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Richard Smith, Maxine Rex and Mary Lou Toussant.

A funeral service with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb 28, 2022, at the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour prior to the time of the service.

Burial will be at a later date in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in his name to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
