Canceled at the Oscars, Bhutan’s record at the Oscars

Bhutanese movie ‘Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’ won the Academy Award (Oscar) for the first time. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the International Feature Film category. Now the movie will fight for the final prize. The announcement of the Oscar nominations started after 7 pm Bangladesh time today.

Authorities have not received an Academy Award (Oscar) from Bhutan for 20 consecutive years for inviting movies to the ‘International Feature Film’ category. Despite years of disappointment, Bhutan submitted for the second time at the Oscars in 2020, after a 20-year hiatus, “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.” Sadly, the Oscar authorities declared the movie ‘ineligible’ that year because it did not meet certain conditions. That movie was again submitted to the Oscars in 2021 according to the rules. The Bhutanese movie, which was shortlisted for the Oscars, made history this time. Because, this is the first Bhutanese movie to be nominated for an Oscar. The director of the film is young producer Poyo Chowing Tailor. Earlier, the movie ‘The Cup’ was sent from Bhutan to the Oscars in 1999 but it was not nominated.

Young Yuguen lives with his grandmother in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. His desire is to sing. He plans to go to Australia soon. But luckily he had to go to Lunana, a remote part of Bhutan. The responsibility of teaching in a school fell on his shoulders. It takes about three days to walk across the mountains and hills to the school. Countless people live there. The only school there has to teach students. He has to face a difficult struggle outside the civic amenities.

Although he could not adapt at first, Eugene later adapted to the students. The day was going well. The head of the village said, the weather is not good, it will start snowing soon. Once the snow starts to fall, there will be no way back to the city. The whole area will be covered with ice. The school will be closed for about six months in winter. Even if you don’t want to, you have to return to the city. This is the farthest school in the world.

Japan’s ‘Drive My Car’, Denmark’s ‘Flee’, Italy’s ‘The Hand of God’ and Norway’s ‘The Worst Person in the World’ have also received nominations in the ‘International Feature Film’ category this year. The announcement of the 94th Oscar nominees started at 6:16 pm Bangladesh time on Tuesday. This year, films from 93 countries were submitted to the international section of the Oscars.
