WHAT: Board of education meeting Tuesday
PRESENT: Tony Perrone, Mary Ann McMahon, Kim Barrell, Chris Chieffo and Michele Lamb
The board:
• Approved an after-school intervention program for high school students. Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen said the one-hour program is to help students in different subject areas. A summer intervention program also was approved for the primary, intermediate and middle schools. Staff who help receive a $40-per-hour stipend;
• Accepted retirement of Sandra LaMonica effective May 1 after 32 years in the district. LaMonica was an educational assistant at Niles Primary School;
• Heard from Perrone that discussion on plans for improvements at the football stadium will be postponed until the fall;
• Approved the high school speech team to travel to Wooster High School on March 4 and 5 for an Ohio Speech and Debate Association tournament;
• Accepted a $3,000 donation from Novelis Aluminum for two basketball shooters at the middle and high schools and two display banners;
• Approved agreements with Kent State University and Eastern Gateway Community College for students to earn credit for taking college courses while in high school.
