IHG cardholders: Book by Oct. 28 and get 15% off award stays of 3 nights or less

Editor’s note: We’ve updated this post for the new promotion.

In January and then March, IHG offered 20% off award stays of three nights or longer. Well, now that sale is back — albeit with a 15% discount — for IHG One Rewards members with a Chase IHG Rewards credit card. If you’re eligible, you likely got an email titled “Just for you: 15% off Reward Nights” this morning.

EMAIL FROM IHG ONE REWARDS

Eligible IHG cardholders can get a 15% discount on reward nights when booking stays of three consecutive nights or less. Cardholders must log into their IHG One Rewards account, book award stays at participating hotels between Oct. 24, 2022, and Oct. 28, 2022, and start their stay by Dec. 16, 2022, to be eligible for the discount.

Eligible cardholders will get a 15% discount on the points needed to book an award stay. And IHG will also discount the cash portion of points and cash awards by 15%.

Currently, the discount is only available to Chase IHG credit cardmembers. However, when IHG ran similar promotions in January and March, other members gained access later during the booking window. As such, I wouldn’t be surprised to see additional IHG members get access to this discount soon.

Skeptics may note that IHG uses dynamic pricing and could raise award prices due to this promotion. So, I checked that IHG is applying a 15% discount by searching for the above award twice: once when logged into my IHG One Rewards account (which is linked to an eligible IHG cobranded card account) and once when logged out.

The best flexible rate with the same cancellation policy as the reward night shown in the above screenshot is 465.6 Australian dollars ($293.81). So for this booking, you’d get:

0.79 cents per point if you redeem 37,400 points.0.81 cents per point if you redeem 32,400 points plus $31.0.85 cents per point if you redeem 27,400 points plus $61.0.91 cents per point if you redeem 22,400 points plus $90.1.01 cents per point if you redeem 17,400 points plus $119.1.18 cents per point if you redeem 12,400 points plus $148.

Here are the award prices I found for this same stay when logged out of my account:

As you can see, IHG discounts both the points and the points and cash rate when I’m logged in. You don’t need to register for the promotion or do anything special to get the discount if you’re an eligible cardholder — just log in to your IHG account and search for award nights as you usually would. Based on my searches, Six Senses properties that you can book with IHG points don’t seem to be discounted during this promotion.

Since this promotion is only for award stays of three nights or less, it isn’t stackable with the fourth-night reward offered as a benefit on the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card, IHG® Rewards Traveler Credit Card and IHG® Rewards Premier Business Credit Card.

If you’re eligible for this promotion, check award rates and consider rebooking if you have IHG award stays booked during the stay period.

Bottom line

If you have a stay of three nights or less coming up with IHG and are eligible, it’s worth checking if this 15% discount changes your calculations on whether you should book a paid stay or redeem IHG points. Although eligible members must book by Oct. 28 to get the 15% discount, most IHG award bookings are freely cancelable until shortly before the check-in date.

If you need to earn more IHG One Rewards points, remember that you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Bilt Rewards points to IHG. But, depending on how you value Chase points and Bilt Rewards points, you may get better value buying the IHG points you need.
